The scarce resource is not code.

For most of the last two decades, the difficult part of software was building it. The interesting question was execution. That is no longer the interesting question.

Anyone with a laptop and an afternoon can now ship something that would have taken a small team a month, five years ago. The tools kept improving. Then AI arrived and changed the slope entirely. The floor of what is possible has risen so quickly that most of the old advantages, technical skill, engineering velocity, tooling fluency, have quietly been repriced.

What has not been repriced is judgement. The ability to look at a market, at a team, at a product, and decide, before you begin, whether the thing is worth doing at all. That skill has become disproportionately valuable, precisely because everything downstream of it has become cheap.

The scarce resource is not code. It is clarity.

What clarity actually costs

Clarity is not a workshop. It is not a canvas. It is not a two-day offsite. Those are useful, sometimes, but they are the visible part of something that is mostly invisible: a slow, patient willingness to sit with a problem long enough to see its actual shape.

That patience is what we have organised the studio around. Every engagement begins with a period where we deliberately refuse to talk about solutions. We ask, we read, we walk around the problem. It is uncomfortable, people want to move, but every time we shortcut it we regret it two months later.

What we do with the extra time

One of the strange consequences of AI is that the time you save on building can be invested somewhere else. Most teams reinvest it in more building. We think that is a mistake. The teams that will do the best work in the next few years are the ones who take that recovered time and put it back into thinking.

That is the whole argument for how we work. Not slower. Not more cautious. Just more of the attention placed at the beginning, where it compounds, and less of it at the end, where it usually turns into rework.

If this way of framing the work resonates, that is probably enough of a signal. We would rather have one careful conversation with someone who already sees it than convince someone who does not.
